Electric Radiator and Electric Boiler Running Costs

EHC recently undertook a survey of 96 properties fitted with a selection of EHC Electric Boilers and Electric Combination Radiator to heat their homes. In some of the households the Electric Boilers may also provide hot water.

The properties monitored in this survey are all Off Grid Social Landlord properties which required an economic  heating solution when the outdated Static Storage Heaters were removed an replaced with a DSR German Electric Radiator

EHC have over 10 years experience supplying Electric Central Heating products to the Social Housing market throughout the UK. Our unique support service, the Total Care Package, has been accepted by Housing Associations and Local Councils as being an essential feature that ensures running costs are kept at an affordable level.

For the purposes of this survey we have applied the current SSE (Scottish & Southern Energy) Tariff for Economy 10 to future proof the exercise. Of the 96 properties surveyed 76 are Elderly or Unemployed with 20 in Full or Part Time Employment.

The majority of properties were generally in good condition having  benefitted from external or Cavity Wall Insulation upgrades.

Under our Tenant Care Package each Household had visits pre and post installation from an EHC Liaison Surveyor to ensure understanding of their particular Heating System (Electric Boiler, or Electric Radiator), Controls, Tariff’s and associated Running Cost indications and the correct method to utilise the benefits of the Economy 10 Tariff.

The results are all based on actual Meter Readings taken when the systems were installed and the latest available Meter Readings available when the Survey was completed.

The results of the survey for the 96 properties show that on average the systems had been installed for 893 days with an average Daily Cost of £2.03 for Whole House Electricity which includes, Heating, Domestic Hot Water, Cooking and Lighting etc. in addition to the £2.03 there is also a Standing Charge Cost of £0.28 taking the Daily Cost to £2.31. When the figure is annualised the Total Cost is £843.15 on average per property.

The average cost per day was 13.8 pence per kW and as such if the occupants within the survey could obtain a 24 Hour Domestic Tariff with a single Tariff cheaper they would obviously make savings against the above averages. I.e. a 12.0 per kW Tariff would provide savings of 1.8p (13%) which in turn would reduce the Annualised Total to £733.54 which is a daily cost of £2.01.

The average kW’s per day consumed by each property was 14.7 kW’s with the Annualised total being 5365 kW. The survey also demonstrates that the usage split was 48% Peak and 52% Off Peak.
